A SIDE EYE STORY · SPUD

Trust started with doing less

At first we did almost nothing. I sat. Spud watched. Trust began in the space where nobody asked him to be brave before he was ready.

MY STORY

Real dogs. No perfect ending required.

Spud had never lived inside a house. He’d learnt to survive, not to relax. A woman rescued him even though she wasn’t really a dog person. She simply couldn’t leave him where he was. She gave him somewhere safe.

I drove about half an hour each way most afternoons just to spend time with him. At first we didn’t do much. I’d sit. He’d watch.

Some days he’d stay on the other side of the yard. Then one day he stayed a little closer. A while later he lay down instead of standing. His breathing slowed. He started blinking normally instead of staring. Those things matter.

A dog that’s constantly scanning the world isn’t ready to learn much else. Only once Spud looked comfortable around me did we start going anywhere.

Short walks. Quiet places. New smells. If something worried him, we’d stop. There wasn’t any point asking him to be brave when he was already frightened.

Over time he recovered more quickly. He’d notice something new, look, then go back to sniffing. Those little recoveries became more common.

Eventually Spud went to a home with people who understood him. He didn’t need to become a different dog. He just needed enough good experiences that the world stopped feeling dangerous all the time.

Feeling safe came before learning anything else.
